How Often Should Your Child Have Eye Exams?
Children need several eye exams as they grow to help ensure their eyes develop regularly. We complete a thorough assessment during your child’s eye exam based on their current stage of development.
According to the American Optometric Association, your child should have eye exams on the following schedule:
- Their first exam between 6–12 months old
- At least one exam between 3–5 years old
- Annual exams from ages 6–18
What to Expect During Your Child’s Eye Exam
Your child’s sight is crucial for their development as they learn new visual skills. Your child’s stage of development influences what tests we complete during their exam. Their exam becomes more comprehensive as their vision continues to develop.
No matter your child’s age, we always test for signs of common eye conditions, including:
Signs Your Child May Have an Eye Problem
Many vision problems can develop in children at a young age, and your child may not realize they’re having struggles. They may assume every person sees just like them, making it important to watch for signs of a vision problem in your child.
Your child may have a vision-related issue if they experience the following:
- Rubbing their eyes consistently
- Focusing problems
- Reading difficulties
- Sitting too close to the TV
- Struggling to see far away objects
- Having frequent headaches
